When most people think of massage they imagine the soothing, relaxing strokes characteristic of the Swedish Massage technique. As opposed to deep tissue techniques, Swedish Massage typically focuses on superficial muscles, and is always used to begin a massage, warming and softening superficial muscles before attempting to influence muscles located deeper in the body.
The 5 basic strokes included in the Swedish Massage technique are Effleurage, Pettrisage, Tapotement, Friction and Vibration. This combination provides a comprehensive therapeutic massage. Pressure applied during any massage should be at the client’s level of comfort.
